Microaggressions: LGBTQ+

In this lesson, we cover what microaggressions are, and the sometimes subtle but always harmful nature of microaggressions. We examine the microaggressions specifically experienced by LGBTQ+ people in the workplace and provide practical guidance for fostering a more inclusive workplace through more considered use of language. We establish what it means to ‘out’ somebody, the risks LGBTQ+ people face by being out at work, unintentional harm caused by inappropriate language usage, and the emotional effects of dealing with microaggressions on a daily basis. We highlight how to safely challenge discrimination and advocate for others.
